I have considered Eliot's poetry from two perspectives, two potentially contradictory perspectives. The first is Eliot's abiding sense that life is often a failure to live fully - to have a proper, vivid, satisfying emotional life. And I have explained that this yearning for fulfilment is almost a cliché of romanticism...The other counterperspective, the classicist, is sceptical of strong emotion as a virtue in itself; even as it extols intensity, insists on complexity.
